The recent surge in ICE-ERO activities has created a climate of anxiety, leaving many families especially children, youth, and elderly community members struggling to meet their basic needs.
With many migrant families too frightened to go to work, send their kids to school, or even attend doctor’s appointments, the need for support has never been greater. We refuse to let our community members become mere merchandise in a broken Immigration system. Instead, we are dedicated to ensuring that every family has access to high-quality food during this crisis.
Our program is possible thanks to the generosity of people like you, who donate and we partner with local churches to help us organize and provide nutritious food directly sourced from local stores. This is not food from Food banks; it is fresh, quality produce and goods purchased by our volunteers and supporters who believe in the dignity of our migrant families.
By choosing to support our Harvest of Hope initiative, you are not only aiding those in need but also empowering local businesses, fostering a sense of solidarity, and building stronger ties within our community. While the food pantries do incredible work, the reality is that they cannot reach every member of our community seeking assistance. In a world where vulnerability often overshadows strength, Defensa del Barrio rises as a beacon of hope and empowerment. Our community defense program is devoted to teaching individuals their rights and how to protect one another as we strive for a peaceful, loving, and harmonious existence. It is through knowledge and collective action that we build a better world for ourselves and future generations.

Established at the onset of this governmental administration, Defensa del Barrio was born from the understanding that the safety of our communities lies in our hands. We recognize that no one will come to save us; it is up to us to learn together, to prepare for what lies ahead, and to stand firm in solidarity against injustice. In our beautiful state of Oregon and beyond, we aim to create dignified communities through education, mutual support, and active resistance.

Defensa del Barrio has provided invaluable training to individual migrant groups, churches, partner organizations, and local government entities. We work hand-in-hand with our barrios to form "Comités Populares," because we believe that together ¡somos más! we are more. By harnessing the power of our migrant communities, we can ensure that we are all equipped with the knowledge and tools needed to resist the inhumane actions of immigration authorities.

We understand that in times of crisis, such as ICE raids, preparation is our most potent form of defense. By educating ourselves and each other on our rights, we increase our chances of survival and resilience. Through Defensa del Barrio, we prepare not only those who are directly affected but also our allies, creating support networks ready to stand together when someone in our community is threatened.

Our comités de defensa consist of dedicated volunteers from every corner of our communities, committed to supporting families facing the threat of detention. We document incidents, defend our communities, and protect one another using peaceful tactics, fostering a culture of solidarity and respect.

WHO ARE WE?

VIVA Inclusive Migrant Network is a non-profit organization that supports Oregon migrant communities. VIVA defends migrant communities by helping them identify useful tools for defending their rights and ending family separation. We believe that No Human Being is Illegal!! We believe that the criminalization of immigration is immoral. Migration is a human right. By uniting forces and working together we can make a difference for humanity.  Let's build more inclusive communities!

VIVA was born out of the personal experience of its founder, Francisco Aguirre, who decided to channel the pain from family tragedy into something positive for the immigrant community of Oregon. Want to find out more about VIVA?

We are committed to defending and supporting immigrant and refugee communities.  We believe that our people are heroic, those who work so hard in this country and yet are suffering under inhumane immigration laws. We work tirelessly defending the rights of these communities.

EMPOWER THE COMMUNITY

We know that when we empower our people, we all benefit.  That is why we dedicate our time to helping develop leadership in our communities. Join us in our effort to create leadership among our migrants and refugees.  We believe that freedom is for everyone.

FIGHT AGAINST UNJUST POLICIES

VIVA works tirelessly against inhumane immigration laws and policies. We work together for a better future for our immigrant and refugee communities. We dream of building communities where migrants and refugees are welcome, where there is no room for hatred.

THE UNITED STATES CONTINUES TO VIOLATE THE HUMAN RIGHTS OF IMMIGRANTS AT THE BORDER AND INSIDE THE COUNTRY

Why do we do what we do? Simply put, because the US violates the human rights of our immigrant community! In spite of the fact that the US economy very much depends on immigrant - and undocumented - labor, the US policy toward the migrant community is inhumane and cruel.

More than 15,00 migrant children were put in cages!

In an effort to punish immigrants crossing the southern border of the United States, the US government has adopted hateful and inhumane policies such as “zero tolerance” against asylum seekers, resulting in the imprisonment of thousands of children. The use of cages is a particularly cruel method of keeping children away from their parents. This needs to stop.  KIDS BELONG TOGETHER WITH THEIR PARENTS!

More than 10,000 migrants have died at the border since 2000

We see how Central American families die trying to cross the border – and all because the United States, with its arrogance, hatred, and discrimination, forces them to take dangerous routes where their lives are snatched by the Rio Grande, the unforgiving desert, the border patrol, or delinquency.

Thousands are being detained and returned to México

The United States is violating international law by denying asylum to those who are fleeing violence in Central America. It is committing a violation of the human rights of thousands of immigrants.  Migration is a right, not a crime.

DEFENSA DEL BARRIO: ASSERTING OUR RIGHTS

The Defensa Del Barrio project is our main effort! Defending the rights of migrants means teaching our community to know and defend their rights.  It means creating awareness about the need to defend our neighborhoods against unscrupulous immigration laws.  VIVA is implementing the Defensa Del Barrio project for communities in Oregon, with the goal of teaching and learning about our rights and how to enforce those rights. We all know that we are at a critical moment with this administration and we must get organized and work together. Get involved in helping our people understand their rights!
